Most menswear basic garments were either developed for the military or for utilitarian use.
The perfect example is the field jacket. The 1930's field jacket was developed by the United States Army and was based on a civilian windbreaker. Unfortunately the first field jacket did not offer much protection from rain or insulation from the wind.
Since then, the field jacket has gone through many changes and iterations.
The modern jacket has a built in hood rolled up in a pouch on the back of the neck and buttons on the inside for the insulated lining.
The modern gentleman can wear the field jacket in multiple ways:
- over a suit or blazer
- casually layered over a sweater or flannel shirt
- waxed for extra water resistance

Due to its popularity, The design was quickly copied by manufacturers and sold to the general public.
Today every high street and luxury brand has their own interpretation of the field jacket.
