Wear bright colours
Wear impeccably tailored clothing (suits, dress trousers, Sportcoats)
Wear something else besides tailored wear.
In my case I decided to wear a peacoat.
The Urquhart check pattern is a bit out there compared to its militaristic roots but it doesn’t however change its overall functionality.
I went with a red and purple Tatersall shirt to compliment the peacoat. I kept the knit wear simple and stuck to a navy cardigan. Generally if you don’t know what colour knit wear to wear, navy is always a safe bet. Actually any clothing in navy is a safe bet. The brown tie also has a navy stripe to go with the cardigan.
I decided to wear my red moleskin trousers to avoid the outfit becoming to monochromatic.
The brown Hat compliments the Harvard loafers and the tie and the Scarf is monochromatic enough that it doesn’t conflict with the peacoat but has hints of red to match up with the trousers. I stuck to a solid burgundy for the socks.
Looking at the outfit from close up, there are actually 4 patterns at work. Generally the maximum number of patterns suggested is 3 but in this case the 4 don’t conflict. The multiple check patterns work because they are all different scales.
I guess I'm not the only one that thinks it works as I was lucky enough to get snapped by Harpers Bazaar Singapore!
